Choosing the Right Colour Temperature

Colour Temperature is measured using degrees Kelvin (K). The lower the Kelvin (K) value the warmer (More Orange) the light will appear and the higher the Kelvin value the cooler (More Blue) the light will appear. These values range from 1700k (very warm white) all the way up to 6500k (daylight).

Our lights come in the most popular colour temperatures for lighting homes and offices.

2700k is mostly used in living rooms, bedrooms, restaurants and hotels. The colour temperature creates a cosy and warm atmosphere in the space. This temperature is not recommended for bathrooms and kitchens.

3000k is suitable for most home applications including bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, passageways and lounge areas. The warm glow creates a cosy and warm atmosphere in the space while not being too warm.

4000k is commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms, retail, showrooms and also general office lighting. Cool white is natural looking and provides a good light output. We do not recommend using cool white in your normal living areas like lounge areas and bedrooms.

Understanding Beam Angles

Every light has a beam angle. LED downlights, car headlights and even candles have beam angles. The beam angle is the measurement of the distribution of light. Most downlights have a beam angle of around 36 degrees which is our most popular choice. A candle would have a beam angle of 360 degrees as the light is spread all around. The brightness of light is measured in Lumens.

A wider beam angle does not give you more light as the lumen output remains the same, however it spreads the total amount of light over a greater distance.

At LEDGlow we offer 4 varieties of beam angles for our lighting fixtures.

15 Degrees (Narrow Spot) is a good choice for lighting up a specific focal point in a room such as artwork or for over the top of work areas such as desks and kitchen benches.

24 Degrees (Spot) should be used in applications where the ceiling is 3 metres or higher. With high ceilings, a beam angle of 25 degrees or narrower is recommended.

36 Degrees (Flood) is the most common choice and matches what you are used to expect with downlights. This beam angle should be used in most places around the home where normal lighting is required.

60 Degrees (Wide Flood) are commonly used in lounge rooms and living areas that do not need as much light, a wider beam angle of around 60 degrees might be all that you need for your downlights.

If you are not sure about which beam angle to choose, the 36 Degree beam angle will work fine in most types of rooms but it does depend on the spacing of the lights and the application of the space.
